Special Educational Needs
Although all children have specific needs, some children may experience particular difficulties at some stage during their development. At InSPE all children are valued, respected and welcomed to the school whatever their additional educational needs. We will support their learning through individual objectives, specialised resources and specifically trained teachers. For example, in the Nursery School we regularly use some of the signs of Makaton (www.makaton.org), a basic sign language for young children. This gives all children (especially non-speaking children) a common ‘language’.
It is our policy to integrate all pupils fully into the daily life of their class and school. There may be times, however, when the specific needs of a child is best suited for them to be removed from the class and work on a one-to-one basis. In certain instances where a child requires a personal, full-time teaching assistant an additional charge will be charged.
The school employs a full-time Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) who works directly with those children who need extra support and is responsible for overseeing referrals and meetings. If for any reason we are unable to meet the specific needs of a pupil, we reserve the right to recommend to parents that they seek an alternative facility. In very exceptional circumstances where a pupils’ attendance at the school is detrimental to the other pupils’ learning, we also reserve the right to withdraw the place.
