The Early Years Curriculum
General
InSPE provides a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, which addresses the developmental needs of the whole child. We refer to it as a holistic curriculum. It is based on best practice in UK Schools, with influences from around the world, enriched and adapted for an International Community.
English is the only language used throughout the school. As most children have English as a second language it is essential that the early curriculum is not language based. The distinctive early years curriculum allows equality of access as children experience the concepts in a practical, ‘hands on’ way. Children can start learning from the minute they walk into a classroom.
The curriculum used at the school is planned within the following areas of learning and experience:
All staff have long term, medium term and short term plans with learning objectives relevant to their children’s ages and stages of development. Activities are planned which allow for differentiation according to ability.
There is a cycle of planning, implementation, evaluation and assessment. Records are kept using observations as an evidence base.
The Early Years Curriculum
-
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Our school offers opportunities and provides experiences for the children to develop a positive sense of themselves and of others, respect for others, social skills and a positive disposition to learn. We also ensure support for children’s emotional well-being to help them to know themselves and what they can do.
-
Communication, Language and Literacy
As children develop speaking and listening skills they build the foundation for literacy, for making sense of visual and verbal signs and ultimately for reading and writing. All children learn to talk by being talked to, but also through activities and experiences that engage all the senses, such as music, dance, rhymes and songs.
-
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
Babies and children’s mathematical development occurs as they seek patterns, make connections and recognise relationships through finding out about working with colours, shapes, space and measures, matching and sorting, numbers and counting. They use their knowledge and skills in these areas to solve problems, generate new questions and make connections across other areas of learning and development.
-
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
InSPE offers a stimulating environment with a range of activities, which will encourage children’s interest and curiosity, both indoors and outdoors. We support children’s learning by offering them opportunities to use a range of tools safely, encounter creatures, people, plants and objects in their natural environments and in real life situations.
-
Physical Development
Physical Development takes place across all areas of learning and development, inside and outside. Children are given the opportunity to be active and interactive and, at the same time, to improve skills of coordination, control, manipulation and movement.
-
Creative Development
Being creative enables children to explore many processes, media and materials and to make new things emerge as a result. Children’s creativity will be extended to support their curiosity, exploration and play. Children will explore and share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of art, music, movement, dance, imaginative and role-play activities.
